Clinical Laboratories

The National Referral Laboratory (Central Laboratory)

The National Referral Laboratory, Central Laboratory offers the following testing menu: Clinical chemistry, Flow cytometry (CD4), and Immunochemistry, Serology testing and other tests relevant to medicine and/or disease surveillance to physicians, health care providers, and epidemiologists for the benefit of the patient and population. The catchment area is not limited to any facility, all facilities in regard to their inefficiency or service failures does refer samples to CL.

Regional Hospital Laboratories & Health Centre Laboratories

As part of the diagnostic service, Regional Hospital Laboratories and Health Centre Laboratories offer the following testing menue: clinical chemistry, bacteriology, parasitology, Tuberculosis microscopy and GeneXpert, Haematology Testing and other tests relevant to medicine and/or disease surveillance to physicians, health care providers, and epidemiologists for the benefit of the patient and population. . The catchment area is not limited to the Hospital only, the services are also offered to peripheral facilities namely; Tuberculosis Clinic, Voluntary Counselling Testing/Ant-Retroviral Therapy Centre and the Public Health Unit.

National TB Reference Laboratory

Overview

The National TB Reference Laboratory is physically located in the country’s capital city, Mbabane, in a close vicinity to other public health institutions, and is overseen by the Estwatini Health Laboratory Service (EHLS) under the Ministry of Health (MOH). Its main functions are to provide routine laboratory services which are the diagnosis of TB, supervise other laboratories within the TB laboratory network, supporting research studies, and carrying out validations and verifications of new laboratory techniques before implementation

The National TB Reference Laboratory offers the following test menu: Culture (MGIT 960 liquid culture),Smear microscopy, Drug Susceptibility Testing (DST) (First Line(FL) and Second Line(SL) Drug Susceptibility Testing (DST) (First Line(FL) and Second Line(SL) & Line Probe Assay(LPA) (FL and SL LPA)

Histology & Cytology Laboratory

Overview

The Eswatini Anatomical Pathology Laboratory is a specialty under Eswatini Health Laboratory Services located at Mbabane Government Hospital Complex. It is mandated to provide histopathology and cytopathology diagnostic services to the people of The Kingdom of Eswatini

Mission

To support the delivery of cost effective diagnosis and management of diseases, monitoring of treatment, control of infectious diseases and health promotion.

Objectives

  • Provide diagnostic testing in histopathology and cytopathology. Where the laboratory does not have the capacity to perform the test, samples are reffered to other laboratories within or outside the country. MORE INFO

National Molecular Reference Laboratory

Overview

The National Molecular Reference Laboratory is a public facility working under the administration of the Swaziland Health Laboratory Service, overseen by the Ministry of Health. It is located in the fourth level of the Swaziland Health Laboratory complex which is adjacent to the Mbabane Government Hospital. The laboratory provides referral services for HIVVL-RNA PCR, HIV-DNA PCR (EID), Malaria LAMP testing and other tests relevant to disease surveillance. The Roche platform is currently in use for Molecular diagnostics of HIV.

NMRL also receives samples for the surveillance of vaccine preventable diseases such as Rotavirus, Rubella and Measles. The lab has a malaria wing that processes samples from across the country using the LAMP assay.

Mission

To provide the delivery of cost effective laboratory diagnosis of malaria and HIV, monitoring of treatment, support the control of infectious diseases, and health promotion through research and surveillance of disease trends at all levels of the health care system. MORE INFO

National Sample Transport Service

Overview

The National Sample Transportation System (NSTS) is a government managed sample transportation system that creates a link between the laboratories and health facilities. As part of the diagnostic services arm of the Eswatini Health Laboratory Service (EHLS), the NSTS aims to improve health care service delivery by increasing access to laboratory diagnostics through provision of an effective laboratory sample transportation system in The Kingdom of Eswatini.

Mission

The NSTS strives to provide a patient focused service that is appropriate, timely, efficient, safe and reliable for all patients that seek laboratory diagnostic services, specifically in the remote health facilities, so as to support and promote the quality of health care in The Kingdom of Eswatini.

Objectives

  • Improved access to laboratory testing services by peripheral clinics
  • Preserve the quality of samples and ensure they are timely delivered to testing laboratories through the use of appropriate sample handling, transportation procedures and practices according to the National Sample Transportation Service Manual as well as the ISO 15190, 15189 and ISO 22870 standards.
  • The transportation of results back to the health facility within 3 days after the Referral testing laboratory has released the result.
